The changing face of adult literacy

Over the past 25 years, the organization has seen its mission evolve dramatically. It was founded in 1983 to improve the lives of the estimated 15 percent of Charlottesville-area residents who could not read or write in English. Most, if not all, of these residents were American-born.

No longer. While the region’s illiteracy rate still hovers around 15 percent, the population of the illiterate residents has shifted. Now, the vast majority of residents who need English tutoring were born in another country.

2008 Women’s 4-Miler

A record number of women participated in the 26th running of the race. Over 3,000 females entered and despite grueling weather conditions, close to 2,500 women crossed the finish line. With searing temperatures in the 80s and 100 percent humidity, the women were battling with what race organizers called some of the most challenging conditions in the race’s history.

Our Lady of Peace residents are getting into the Olympic spirit with a statewide competition of Nintendo Wii bowling. Several teams compete at the Hillsdale Drive retirement community and the scores are compared with other nursing homes around the state. For many seniors, it’s the first time they’ve ever played a video game.

The derby pits stripped down cars against each other in a fight to the death. Winners live to drive in the final round, losers limp off the playing arena with the aid of tow trucks and tractors.

The University of Virginia awarded about 6,000 degrees on Sunday, May 18, 2008 during the 179th commencement. A light rain didn’t stop raucous celebrations among the graduates and their families, who filled the Lawn with cheers and emotion.

Melody’s Rescue

Crozet volunteer fire fighters and animal rescue helped free Melody, a mixed breed dog who had been stuck inside a culvert since Friday at a farm on Shelton Mills Road in Crozet, VA. Owner Catherine Hermary-Vieille says her dog had gone missing Friday night after heavy storms passed through the area possible scaring the dog into the pipe. Rescue workers worked together for over an hour digging, sawing and eventually freeing the dog. Melody was taken to her veterinarian for observation.

With parachutes strapped to their backs, a handful of people piled into the Twin Otter plane one by one. The weather was holding up at Skydive Orange, and the parachuters were looking forward to another successful skydive. However, the experience was slightly different for a few of the parachuters. Some wore bat-like suits that connected their arms and legs with a piece of fabric. These wingsuits allowed their pilots to glide around in the clouds, giving them a very different experience than their skydiving peers.
